Joseba Azkarraga


Joseba Azkarraga, Councilor of Justice, Employment and Social Security of the Basque Government, recently visited San Francisco. Mr. Azkarraga also visited Boise, Reno and Salt Lake City. In San Francisco, Mr. Azkarraga visited the University of San Francisco School of Law, and met with Father Chancellor John Lo Schiavo, SJ, Father Rector John Treacy, SJ, Mr. Jeff Brand, Dean of USF School of Law, Father George Schultze, SJ & Dr. Gene Muscat, Senior Assistant Dean. Discussions were held on future exchanges between USF, Santa University and universities in the Basque Country. 

Mr. Azkarraga also visited San Francisco’s City Hall and met with the President of the Board of Supervisors, Matt Gonzalez.

On February 14th, Mr. Azkarraga gave a presentation at the Basque Cultural Center, in which he discussed the Basque economy, the problem of ETA violence, and a proposal for a new political statute (Ibarretxe Plan) to replace the old Gernika Statute. After a brief break, Mr. Azkarraga met with local representatives of the International Basque Organization for Human Rights, to discuss their current efforts and to exchange information:


Accompanying Mr. Azkarraga on this tour were Pello Irujo, Vice Councilor; Inmaculada de Miguel, Director of International Relations; Arantza F. de Jáuregui, Secretary to the Councilor; Tony Jansson, Interpreter; and Xabier Irujo, head of International Relations for the San Fermin Basque School (Pamplona). Several Basque Country journalists accompanied the group to record the visit for the Basque media.

Born in Salvatierra-Agurain (Álava) in 1950. 

 

Married with two children. 
1979-1982: Member of the Lower House (Madrid). 
1982-1986: Representative of the Self-governing Community of the Basque Country in the Senate (Spanish Parliament -Madrid). 
1986-1993: Member of Parliament for EA (Eusko Alkartasuna) in the Lower House. 
1993 onwards: Member of the group "Mondragón Corporación Cooperativa". Director of the Public Sector of Caja Laboral-Euskadiko Kutxa. 
Member of the National Executive Board of Eusko Alkartasuna during two periods: between 1987-1993 and from 1999 onwards. 
Member of the Basque Government Minister for Justice, Employment and Social Security from 17 September 2001.
